November 4, 2022, marks 175 years since the death of Felix Mendelssohn at the age of 38. In this programme we concentrate on the young Mendelssohn and the music he composed as a 12-13 year old – already a composer genius! The Harald Hårfagre Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Miquel Pérez Iñesta performs the piano concerto in A minor (no. 0, composed when Mendelssohn was only 12 years old!) with soloist Marina Johansson as well as two sinfonie for strings: no. 7 in D minor and no. 10 in B minor. Mendelssohn’s music typically has a surplus of energy with an air of positive and playful carefreeness. Later in his career he composed many works that we are familiar with, for example the incidental music for Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with its famous wedding march, The Hebrides/Fingal’s Cave overture, and the great E-minor violin concerto (a standard work in the violin repertoire).
